The Master of Arts in English Language Teaching and Assessment’s Program Seminar was successfully held at Southwest Petroleum University

 

On 18 June 2025, at the invitation of the School of Foreign Languages at Southwest Petroleum University, Dr. Gavin Bui, Programme Director of the Master of Arts in English Language Teaching and Assessment (MA-ELTA) at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, delivered an admission talk to over 100 senior-year undergraduate students majoring in English and Russian.

 

 

 

Professor Lyu Xuying, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, warmly introduced Dr. Gavin Bui to the students. She spoke highly of Hang Seng University of Hong Kong’s distinctive strengths in the field of language education. In her remarks, Dean Lyu encouraged attendees to seize this opportunity and actively consider pursuing further studies in Hong Kong, emphasising the benefits of broadening their international perspectives and enhancing their professional competencies.

 

 

During the presentation, Dr. Bui provided a comprehensive overview of the MA-ELTA programme at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, detailing its distinctive advantages, educational objectives, curriculum structure, and admission requirements. He particularly emphasised the programme’s balanced focus on both theory and practice, highlighting its partnerships with several local Hong Kong schools to provide students with valuable teaching internships. These collaborations, he explained, are designed to cultivate future English language educators with a global outlook. Dr. Bui also shared success stories of past graduates, illustrating the programme’s strong career prospects and opportunities for professional growth.

 

 

The information session was met with great enthusiasm, culminating in a lively Q&A where students actively engaged with questions.

 

 

This admission talk provided students from Southwest Petroleum University’s School of Foreign Languages with valuable insights into Hong Kong’s education system, while offering clearer perspective on their future academic planning.

 

Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU), established in 1958, was the second petroleum undergraduate institution founded in New China. As a national “Double First-Class” initiative university with world-class discipline construction, it has been selected for the “Fundamental Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China”.
The School of Foreign Languages, founded concurrently with the university in 1958, began admitting English majors in 1978. Its academic milestones include: Offering the “Linguistics and Applied Linguistics” Master’s programme in 2000, Commencement of Russian undergraduate admissions in 2008, and accreditation for the Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) programme in 2010.
