MA-ELTA Students’ Participation in the Ting Ka Ping Foundation English Summer Camp as Intern Teachers

Sponsored by the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the Department of English at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong organised a 5-day English Summer Camp for 40 Grade 10 (High School Grade 1) students from Heyuan Tin Ka Ping Experimental High School and Zhuhai Tin Ka Ping High School. The camp aimed to inspire these mainland students to learn English through interactive and task-based instruction. It also provided valuable teaching experience for graduate students from the English Language Teaching and Assessment (MA-ELTA) programme who aspire to work in the education sector.

During the camp, students participated in workshops led by our teaching staff, including Dr. Gavin Bui, Dr. Beatrice Ma, and Dr. Amy Kong. They learned various English skills, such as task-based learning, the English sound system, self-learning strategies, and narrative writing. Additionally, they visited the Hakka walled village, Sam Tung Uk Museum, and the Tin Ka Ping Foundation to explore Hakka culture in English. Students also engaged in group activities, working in teams of four under the intensive guidance of 10 MA-ELTA students.

The camp concluded with remarkable individual presentations by these middle school students about their experiences, held in our state-of-the-art Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab (the Extended Reality XR lab). These presentations were judged by Dr. Anna Tso (Head of English Department), Dr. Gavin Bui, and Dr. Amy Kong, followed by a memorable lunch, prize-presentation, and photo sessions. Both HSUHK’s teaching staff and MA-ELTA students, along with Tin Ka Ping teachers and students, gained unforgettable experiences, professional exchanges, and inspiration for teaching and learning from the camp.
